Dread is exactly what you think of it. It's a tension based roleplaying game, where the DM issues the players to pull blocks from a block tower to make the rolls. The higher the "Dread" the more tension builds while picking the blocks, which in the end get more difficult. When the tower falls over, your fate is sealed with the DM. you just don't know when in the session. 

Dread : The RPG is best played with horror style theme's, but nothing would stop the storyteller to implement more pressure building adventures. Just know that death will be around every corner and it could even be in-game. Think of a pack of wolves hunting down the players for horror. 

Another form of Dread, is a room full of presidents of aligned countries without outside contact, getting news snippets from the outside that the world is waiting for the press of the nuclear button in the middle of the room. Would they sacrifice everything for a lie or is the news true?

Dread The RPG has a huge content base and more than enough to not have to think of your first adventures yourself. Do a search and you shall find. 

Dread The RPG won multiple ENnie Awards in 2006, including the Golf ENnie for innovation and Silver ENnies for Best Game and Best Rules. It might be an old beast, but still one of the best RPG's around. Find out for yourself!
